Science of Sport & City of Inglewood Give Families Free Day of STEM Educational Experiences with Inglewood STEM Fest

LOS ANGELES – April 21, 2022 – Science of Sport, in partnership with the City of Inglewood, kicked off its inaugural Inglewood STEM Fest with interactive and engaging STEM activity stations focused on incorporating sports examples for Inglewood youth in grades Kindergarten through Sixth.

The free event at Edward Vincent Jr. Park in Inglewood, California impacted over 300 kids – and included community partners Angel City FC, Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, LAFC, The Marvin Group, Los Angeles Clippers, USTA So Cal and other local professional sports teams and community-based STEM organizations.

“It was a great turnout,” said Daren Heaton, Executive Director, Science of Sport. “Being able to expose the kids, parents, and community to STEM through sports through interactive activities and hearing from individuals that work in professional sports that use STEM in their jobs was incredible. The Inglewood STEM Fest is something we plan on doing every year with the City of Inglewood to bring local sports organizations together for a day of fun and engaging STEM learning.”

Bally Sport’s Sarina Morales, and moderator of the event’s STEM and Sports panel, was joined on stage by Andy Schwich, Manager of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for USTA SoCal; Jake Temme, Data Analytics Manager for the Los Angeles Rams; Kari Fleischauer, Chief of Staff and VP of Strategy for ACFC; and Liane Angeles, Director of Technology for the Los Angeles Clippers. Each panelist emphasized the importance of STEM throughout their careers and gave Inglewood STEM Fest participants insight into the various career opportunities in sports.

“As a champion for increasing exposure and opportunities in STEM, it was amazing to see all the families and organizations come out to support that same mission,” said Ashley Dean, VP of Programs & Development, Science of Sport. “It’s something we look forward to hosting for the many years ahead and we could not have done it without our tremendous partnership with Teresa Estrada, Recreation Superintendent, and her team at City of Inglewood, Parks and Rec.”

Science of Sport and the City of Inglewood Parks and Recreation will host a STEM and Sports camp this Summer 2022 where 85 Inglewood STEM Fest participants will receive a complimentary two-week camp session. This is in many thanks to funds raised through the support of Inglewood STEM Fest community partners.

The nonprofit is actively seeking community partners for its STEM and Sports Summer Camp with a goal of raising $100,000 in total to support summer camp initiatives.
